Ghana – At 26, Ezekiel Edward Nettey-Oppong, PhD, has become one of the youngest Ghanaian PhD graduates, having earned his doctorate in Biomedical Engineering from Yonsei University, South Korea. He is also an alumnus of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering and laid the foundation for his academic and research journey. His achievement marks a personal milestone and stands as a symbol of what young Ghanaians can achieve globally.
During his academic journey, Ezekiel distinguished himself through exemplary performance, earning two First Honors distinctions, two Best Doctoral Student awards, and a remarkable 98.9% cumulative average. He has authored 18 peer-reviewed publications, amassed over 130 citations with an h-index of 6, and secured four research grants. Alongside this, he holds 10 professional certificates and awards and is an active member of eight professional associations, with nine professional appearances at international conferences.

Reflecting on his journey, Ezekiel said:
“This milestone is not just personal—it’s about expanding what young Ghanaians believe is possible. I want advanced biomedical research to translate into real health and technology solutions for Ghana.”
His doctoral research focused on developing biomedical sensors and wearable devices, biomaterials, and computational tools, integrating molecular modeling, characterization techniques, IoT, and machine/deep learning. His work is aimed at translating advanced research into practical health-tech solutions. “My focus is translating biomedical engineering and data-driven research into health technologies, research capacity, and innovation pipelines that benefit the world” he added.
Ezekiel’s achievement has drawn attention not only for his age but also for the breadth and impact of his research, reflecting a commitment to innovation, scientific excellence, and practical solutions for societal challenges.

He hopes to inspire a new generation of Ghanaian scientists and engineers to pursue ambitious global opportunities while contributing meaningfully to national development.
